2022-23 EFL Cup predictions overview
Liverpool won the 2021-22 English Football League Cup by beating Chelsea in the finals on penalties after a 0-0 draw. Now Liverpool is holding the record for the most EFL Cup trophies again, winning the competition on nine separate occasions with another eight titles belonging to Manchester City.
The Cup features all 92 Premier League and English Football League clubs from four leagues in total. Teams face each other in a straight knockout format spanning seven rounds. Premier League clubs that failed to qualify for any European competition enter the EFL Cup in the second round, while the clubs that secured European competition enter in the third round.
Clubs that secure a place in the semi-finals will play over two legs. Winners of the semi-finals face off at Wembley for a chance to lift the much-coveted trophy.

- Manchester City
- Manchester United
- Tottenham Hotspur
Manchester City, the then-defending champions, failed the 2021-22 Carabao Cup as they lost to West Ham United on penalties in the fourth round. As such, the only team, the Citizens, topped were Wycombe Wanderers (6-1) on the home turf in Manchester.
With eight titles to their name, Man City is one trophy short of equalling Liverpool, the tournament’s most-honoured club.
Manchester City is one of the top teams featured in our England’s EFL Cup predictions.
Manchester City’s key players:
- Phil Foden
- Bernardo Silva
- Kevin De Bruyne
- Ruben Dias
- Riyad Mahrez
- Joao Cancelo
Liverpool are arguably one of the best teams in Europe right now. The Reds are known for their aggressive pressing and heavy-metal football under Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool hold the record for most Carabao Cup trophies (9), with the latter winning in the 2021-22 final against Chelsea — the first for Klopp.
On the course to the 2021-22 EFL Cup final, Liverpool beat Arsenal in the semi-finals (0-0, 2-0) and Leicester City (3-3; penalties 5-4). Before that, the Reds topped Preston North End (2-0) and Norwich City (3-0) in the fourth and third rounds, respectively.
Liverpool’s key players:
- Mohamed Salah
- Trent Arnold
- Jordan Henderson
- Virgil van Dijk
- Roberto Firmino
Chelsea are currently struggling after the Roman Empire crumbled. Still, they are among the top favourites to lift the trophy. Unfortunately, the Blues lost the 2021-22 Carabao Cup final to Liverpool on penalties (10-11), which proved to be a rather painful defeat.
Chelsea beat Tottenham (2-0, 1-0) in the two-legged semi-finals and Brentford (2-1) in the quarter-final. Before that, Southampton (1-1, penalties 3-4) and Aston Villa (1-1, penalties 3-4) lost to Chelsea in the fourth and third rounds of the 2021-22 EFL Cup, respectively.
Chelsea’s key players:
- N’Golo Kante
- Raheem Sterling
- Edouard Mendy
- Mason Mount
- Reece James
- Kai Havertz
Tottenham Hotspur boast one of the deadliest attacking firepowers in the Premier League. The Kane and Son duo did a lot of damage to most of the clubs they faced last season. Tottenham scored 85 goals in all 2021-22 competitions, with five goals coming in the Carabao Cup.
Chelsea beat the Spurs in the 2021-22 Carabao Cup semi-finals (0-2, 0-1). Before that, Tottenham managed to top West Ham United (2-1) in the quarter-final, Burnley (1-0) and Wolverhampton Wanderers (2-2, penalties 3-2) in the fourth and third rounds, respectively.
Tottenham still suffer a trophy dilemma as they haven’t won a major trophy since the 2006-07 season win in the League Cup. Antonio Conte took over from Nuno Espirito Santo after another disappointing season. Therefore, the 2022-23 EFL Cup may be a significant focus for the Spurs this season.
Tottenham’s key players:
- Heung-Min Son
- Harry Kane
- Lucas Moura
- Hugo Lloris
- Sergio Reguilon
- Eric Dier
Arsenal have had a lower success rate than other top English clubs in the English League Cup, with the Gunners winning the EFL Cup only twice in their history. In addition, Arsenal have not won the Carabao Cup for 28 years.
In the 2021-22 EFL Cup, Arsenal were eliminated in the semi-finals by Liverpool (0-0, 0-2), the eventual champions. Before that, the Gunners topped Sunderland (5-1) in the quarter-final, alongside Leeds United (2-0), AFC Wimbledon (3-0) and West Bromwich Albion (6-0) on their way to the semis.
Arsenal’s key players:
- Bukayo Saka
- Martin Odegaard
- Thomas Partey
- Gabriel Martinelli
- Emile Smith Rowe
- Kieran Tierney
- Gabriel Magalhaes
